BALTIMORE & OHIO RR
STOCK , 1867. Magnificent graphics adorn this early 10x6"
very collectible stock certificate. A very prominent railroad executive's name
appears as president, JOHN WORK GARRETT. As. President of .B&O
1858-84. :he freed the road of political control and gave it efficient
management. In the Civil War, the railroad was a main objective of Southern
attack and only Garrett's extraordinary skill and energy prevented its
abandonment. The first rail movement of troops in history, the transfer of
20,000 men from the Potomac to Chattanooga, 1863, was a triumph for Garrett.
After the war, he secured direct routs to Pittsburgh and Chicago and a line to
New York

The Monongahela (1863-1908) a 2078-ton steam screw sloop built at the
Phila. Navy Yard was commissioned on Jan. 1863. Her first service was on the
lower Mississippi River where she was heavily engaged at Port Hudson and
elsewhere. From mid-1863 to the end of the Civil War she participated in the
Gulf of Mexico blockade. On 5 August 1864, she played an active role in the
Battle of Mobile Bay, ramming the Confederate ironclad Tennessee
Following the War, Monongahela was assigned to the West Indies. On 18 Nov. 1867,
she was cast ashore at St. Croix, Virgin Island, by a tidal wave and was
only refloated six month

EXCHANGE & BANKING HOUSE INSTRUMENT. An exciting graphic beauty from
Sacramento City, Cal. in 1853, for $700. Neat engraved vignette of sitting
(Spanish or Indian) woman with an American flag draped over her arm. She also
embraces an eagle who perches on globe of America. Funds placed to the account
of The Atlantic Bank of Boston.
This financial instrument was printed for Page & Bacon Exchange & Banking
House and was printed by the prominent firm Toppan & Carpenter, Casilear & Co.
NY & Phila.
Ideal for framing, measures 8 ¼ x 4 inches.

hundred share certificate issued to Franklin Becher, President in 1898. A fine,
attractive engraved vignette and interesting U.S. documentary stamps have create
a handsome financial document for framing Measures approx. 10”x8”. Endorsed by
Franklin A. Becher on engraved verso when sold on January 29, 1899. A couple
of ½ in. separations at foot not entering ornate frame.
